our chapters

At Starbase 20, the 20th Fleet is made up of all of the ships and space stations based in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland (or Eire) and all other islands that with the islands of Great Britain and Ireland that make up the geographical area known as “The British Isles.”

These ships and stations, or “chapters”, are actually individual autonomous fan clubs that are federated with “STARFLEET: The International Association of Star Trek fan clubs“, or SFI for short. Region 20, the 20th Fleet is the largest region, on a membership basis, outside of the United States.

Starbase 20: The home of the 20th Fleet!

Comprising a network of spacedocks and starships across the United Kingdom and Ireland this is one of SFIs largest territories in terms of membership overall and certainly the biggest region outside of the USA.

Each club (or as they are termed in SFI, chapters) acts as its own unit, organising their own activities and calendars. Throughout the year they will come together for regional events bit it also means that at cons there’s usually someone from SFI you can meet and Trek out with!

Region 20 offers a variety of chapters across the length and breadth of its area and with our split focus on in person and online meetings there’s a group here for everyone!

USS Appleton NCC-97001

USS Appleton

Bradford, West Yorkshire

LBSF Appleton is Yorkshire’s premier sci-fi and fantasy fanclub. Originally founded way back in 1993 as Leeds StarFleet, Leeds Bradford StarFleet was the reimagined version circa July 2015. LBSF was quickly recruited into STARFLEET International, simply because, “we can’t let them have all the crazy fun without us!”. Named for Bradfordian Nobel Prize-winning physicist Edward Victor Appleton, part of our logo is a representation of radio waves bouncing off the ionosphere, which E.V. Appleton discovered.

Meet-ups are well known to descend into anarchy and bedlam, usually by the introduction of play-doh, lego or felt. Every year, the LBSF Appleton Away Team ventures to sunny Scarborough, to help run the amazing SciFi Scarborough convention

These are t’voyages of t’USS Appleton. Our continuing mission: to never take ourselves seriously, to ‘ave as much fun as we can, and to leave a trail of hilarity and chaos wherever we shall roam. Sithee! Shurrup and siddown, t’kettle’s brewing. Live long an’ prosper, like.

Spacedock Birmingham

Spacedock Birmingham

Birmingham, West Midlands

At the centre of the road and rail networks of England, and the wider United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is the City Of Birmingham. For over 40 years Birmingham has served as the beating heart of Star Trek fandom in Great Britain. Therefore it is only logical that Spacedock Birmingham, is.

This club, which grew out of Geekology (see www.geekology.org.uk), was set up to enrich it’s members enjoyment of the fandom whilst also raising money for charities.

Our aim is to always move forward, just like our city. We support our fellow Trek fans whenever and wherever we can and make the world that little bit better for all.

Spacedock Boobrie

Spacedock Boobrie

Paisley, Scotland

The Boobrie, a legendary creature of Scottish folklore, is as enigmatic as it is formidable. With its ability to transform and its haunting presence, it captures the imagination, much like the adventures of the crew of the Space Dock Boobrie. STARFLEET’s Region 20 members of the Space Dock Boobrie , named after this mythical being, bring the spirit of exploration and camaraderie to life.

Through role-playing, coffee mornings, and volunteering, they embody the Star Trek ethos of discovery and community. Just as the Boobrie shifts its shape from a massive water bird to a water horse, the members of this association shift roles, creating a tapestry of stories and experiences that enrich their gatherings. Their activities, rooted in the rich soil of Scottish tradition and the boundless universe of Star Trek, create a unique fusion where folklore meets the final frontier.

USS Caroline

USS Caroline

Belfast, Northern Ireland

Welcome aboard the USS Caroline, Northern Ireland’s one and only chapter of STARFLEET International!  Launched in August of 2014, we joined the 20th Fleet which covers the United Kingdom and Ireland.  Lovers of Star Trek and all things sci fi, we’re happy for you to join us! So please, pull up a seat in the Tiberius Lounge and enjoy the ride!

In the beginning, a group of Star Trek fans wanted to start a Belfast chapter.  After attending meetings in Dublin, they supported the dream of the new club with the support of the CuChulain chapter. Before it could begin, the name for the ship had to be chosen.  There was a big discussion with the local SciFi group, The Other Ones, at the time. Many suggestions were made and put forward, but none sounded right.  The first CO was talking about the situation with his father when there was a mention of HMS Caroline, the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland still on service, sitting in a dry dock in Belfast. Finally, the name was right, and the club began to take shape and become a full-fledged idea in reality.  The class of ship, Akira, was chosen from the 1988 movie of the same name. The ship was officially launched in August 2014 before becoming fully commissioned in October 2016.

We are a casual Trek group. With members scattered across the whole Island, some in person meetings are difficult for everyone.  Alongside simply loving Trek and chatting in our Facebook and Discord groups, we meet online every Sunday for a good catchup.  Attendance is never required, but we’re there for all our crew, no matter where they live.  In person meet-ups vary from pub meets, lunches out, plus visits to museums.  We cannot beat a good trip to the Ulster Museum, or a tour of the HMS Caroline, docked in Belfast.  We do have the most fun just kicking back, watching some Trek, and having the craic.
